The experiment in Beek en Donk was conducted to verify whether far-red light could improve the taste of tomatoes. The results showed that the tomato yield under the partial far-red light treatment did not change significantly compared with the traditional red/blue LED treatment, but the overall taste was significantly improved. This is because the refractive index of the tomato surface increases under far-red light treatment, thus increasing the degree of bite. Therefore, the results of this experiment showed that far-red light can improve the taste of tomatoes, and it is a potential means to improve the quality of tomatoes. In addition, the experiment also showed that far-red light can be used in combination with other types of lighting to improve the overall quality of tomatoes. Considering the role of far-red light in improving the taste of tomatoes, the KAS ALS Energiebron project team plans to further study the effects of far-red light on tomato quality and yield. In addition, the team also plans to explore other ways to improve the quality of tomatoes, such as using different types of light and different crop varieties.
